When should you move in after a deep return?

When your return lands deep and the server is still back, step in together, do not stay stuck on the service line.

A deep return can create time because it keeps the serving player further from the net. That is the moment the returning pair can begin to move forward together instead of remaining passive at the back.

The important detail is the quality of the return. You move because the ball has created time, not simply because you have hit a return.

What to do

When the return lands deep, take that time and step forward as a pair. The goal is to pass through transition and arrive in a connected position rather than one player rushing ahead alone.

If the return is weak or short, the same forward movement may not be available. Read the quality of your shot first, then decide whether you have earned the space.

Why it works

This makes the deep return more than a defensive shot. It becomes a way to change your court position and challenge the serving pair for control.

The repeatable pattern is simple: return deep, recognise the time you have created, then move together.
