When should you give up the net?

When the ball is lobbed over you, drop back and rebuild, do not stay stranded at the net.

The net is the attacking position in padel, but trying to keep it at all costs is a mistake. When a lob has gone over you and the opponents have taken away your attacking position, staying stranded near the net leaves too much court behind you.

The smarter decision is to recognise the change early and retreat together.

What to do

Start moving back as soon as you know the overhead ball is no longer comfortable. The aim is not to run backwards in panic. Turn, recover your position and rebuild the point from defence.

Your partner should react with you. One player retreating while the other stays forward creates the same split court problem that appears in many other padel situations.

Why it works

Giving up the net is not losing the point. It is accepting that the rally has changed and choosing a position from which you can defend properly.

Once you have stabilised the rally, you can use the next good ball or lob to fight for the net again.
